34,000 laptops are reported stolen each year.
That's almost 100 per day and only deals with those that are actually reported to the police.
FSA Compliance - Disk Encryption

The need for full disk encryption is increasingly being driven by regulatory compliance, either by the government or regulatory bodies such as the Financial Services Authority (FSA) who now mandate disk encryption for their members if confidential client information is held on computers. They have also stated for the record, that they will fine companies that are not in compliance.
HSBC was recently fined £3.2 million for a series of losses of customer data by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) after its Life division lost an unencrypted CD containing the details of policyholders.
Not only is there the threat of fines from the FSA, there is the very real risk of data going missing. This could be customer records, pricing or even account details. Imagine what your competitors could do with a full database of all of your customers.

Types of Encryption

Full Disk Encryption (or whole disk encryption) uses disk encryption software to encrypt every bit of data that goes on a disk. Full Disk Encryption prevents unauthorized access to data should the computer be lost or stolen.
Data Encryption is similar but only encryptes the files or folders that the user selects to be encrypted.
The best method of encryption is Full Disk Encryption as all the files are automatically encrypted on the disk and the user does not worry about remembering to encrypt the files.
