Image description

In April 2008 the FSA published a report titled “Data Security in Financial Services - Firms’ controls to prevent data loss by their employees and third-party suppliers”. This was a 104 page document describing how financial services firms in the UK should address the risk that their customer data could be lost or stolen and then used to commit fraud or other financial crime.

Our service is designed to help any firm conduct its business in accordance with the FSA's Principles for Business – 'to conduct its business with due skill, care and diligence' and 'to take reasonable care to organise and control its affairs responsibly and effectively, with adequate risk management systems'

Facts

The FSA state that it is not appropriate for customer data to be taken offsite on laptops or other portable devices which are not encrypted. They may take enforcement action if firms fail to encrypt customer data taken offsite.

In February 2007 the Nationwide Buliding Society were fined £980,000 by the FSA after a laptop was stolen that contained un-secured customer data.

More than 3,300 laptops are lost or go missing at the eight largest airports in EMEA each week

The FSA state 'The safekeeping of customer data is a crucial responsibility for firms. We have emphasised the importance of data security for several years, and we currently regard poor data security controls as a serious, widespread and high-impact financial crime risk.'
